My concept of “the Southside” extends South of the Appomattox River and West of the James River to the North Carolina border. The timeline is 1607 to 1781 or so when we told the Brits to leave us the hell alone and take a hike back home. Indegenes did not appreciate us taking over their land very much but then, what do you do against an overwhelming force? This is where it all started…

I will never finish this map. It is “a work in progress” as is said now a days. It is a project that you can get involved with, particularly if your roots go back there… as they say “all roads lead to Virginia”.
I could get long winded with explanations about the “accuracy” of these maps… the short version is that the surveys ‘then’ were just as accurate as they are ‘today’. The problem was that the larger scaled, ‘large’ maps of say, a county size, were ridiculously inaccurate… almost silly.
Each patent that I place on the map has what I call a “Data Sheet”. I draw the patent (found at the Library of Virginia) website. If you would like a PDF file of said Data Sheet, I can email a copy to you. Some Data Sheets are just bare bones and have no meat to chew on other than the survey itself. But some Data Sheets will knock your socks off with information…I call those “Studies”.
Alternatively, If you do not see a patent for your ancestor, and you know damn well it should be there… well then, you can bribe me to get off my arse and draw the thing. You can search the Library yourself (online) and send me the name and date and I will take it from there. I charge a cup of coffee ($5) for each patent.

A bare bones patent: with a few complications…
Here is a “Study”… these get real squirrelly, real fast. Sometimes I can’t figure them out…
Basically, you never know what will turn up. But the really cool part of me consuming large amounts of caffein… is that the map gets bigger.
Its all a “Gestalt” thing… smiling
As a caveat…do be aware that some of these patents have to be associated with other people to determine where they should be placed. So the coffee cups can stack up quickly. I will warn you if that is the case. I am a cheapskate myself, so I know how some of you people are… laughing.
